I grew up listening to a dozen aunts and uncles tell outlandish and occasionally true stories around my grandmother’s dinner table. Their memories came alive for me through the characters they described, the laughter they found in childhood drama, the lessons they learned when life throws its inevitable curve balls. From those nights spent laughing together over the coconut cake crumbs, I bring a desire to tell the truth in ways that matter.
- When I’m telling the story of a new store opening for business to consumer feature articles, I seek the story behind the scenes.
- When working on a magazine feature story, I look for the reason this story matters, where it intersects with the reader.
- When writing a newsletter for business to business updates, I look for the quirky characters who bring color and creativity to the occasionally unexciting newsletter genre.
- When writing creative nonfiction, I seek to tell the truth in ways that connect others.
I write for the “me too” moment. I write, always, for the connection between reader and writer that opens a door for relationship.
When I can write whatever I want, creative nonfiction draws me back into the realm of essay & memoir – personal truth told well. I love taking complex processes and making them simple: in 15 years in higher education, I helped countless students understand the intimidating processes of applying for admission to college and applying for financial aid. And I love helping businesses tell their behind-the-scenes story to customers.
